The annual Chocolate Affair offers the perfect opportunity for chocoholics and dessert enthusiasts to indulge in an irresistible array of chocolate delights—all while raising funds for a worthwhile organization. Event Details Held on a delightful Wednesday evening in early March, the Chocolate Affair is hosted by Home of Hope, Vinita’s sweetest event that brings together the community for a night of gastronomic pleasure. Attendees can look forward to a sumptuous selection of chocolate desserts and sweet treats prepared by the finest restaurants, caterers, specialty shops, and wineries from Vinita and the surrounding Grand Lake area. A Sweet Tradition For many years, the Chocolate Affair took place at the Craig County Community Center. However, in 2021, the challenges posed by the pandemic necessitated a change in format. Embracing the spirit of adaptability, the Home of Hope transformed the event into a drive-through experience. This innovative approach not only ensured safety through social distancing but also garnered popularity among attendees. In past years, vendors delighted guests with delicious chocolate samples and an assortment of other tasty treats. For the drive-through event, all delectable sweets and chocolate delights were conveniently assembled into pre-packaged treat bags, allowing ticket holders to savor the experience from the comfort of their own homes. Highlights of the Evening The Chocolate Affair features a plethora of engaging activities beyond the tantalizing chocolate treats. Guests can participate in a silent auction, which has transitioned online since the event became a drive-through format. The event is known for its fun and creative themes, ranging from a whimsical safari to the enchanting world of Willy Wonka. Attendees have enjoyed special surprises over the years, including visits from Willy Wonka himself and even a free double-feature movie screening on one memorable occasion. Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo in Vinita, OK, is the premier rodeo event held in the Southwest! This is a four-day event that is kicked off by the Annual Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo Parade on RT 66 in downtown Vinita. Every night of the rodeo is filled with action packed events from Girl's Barrel Racing, Bare Back Bronc Riding, Steer Roping, Bull Riding & Team Roping, and much much more!! Bring the family and enjoy an amazing night at the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo in Vinita, OK. Our History Will Rogers was born in 1879, at a ranch house on the Verdigris River. The only towns that existed nearby were Vinita, Indian Territory (which later became Oklahoma), and Coffeyville, Kansas. After his mother died in 1890, Will was sent to several schools away from the ranch, but the one he grew to like the most was Willie Halsell College located in Vinita. He attended three terms from 1892, until 1895, and he never forgot the happy days he spent there or the friends he made. Years later, while attending a school reunion in 1934, Will Rogers told the Vinita folks, "Have a rodeo here next year and I'll come back." He returned that fall for the old-timer's parade, but on August 15, 1935, just days before the rodeo, Will Rogers and famed pilot Wiley Post were both tragically killed in a plane crash. It was decided that the Vinita rodeo would be held as a memorial to Vinita's cherished "son" Will Rogers, and it has been every year since. June 23 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum Summer is here – officially! According to the calendar, it arrived with high temperatures beginning with a “9” last Friday on what is typically referred to as “the longest day of the year.” That’s not true, by the way. I stayed up all day and all night just to make certain. Sure enough, it was the same length as all the other days – 24 hours. FYI. ***** For the second consecutive weekend, there is a concert on the water Saturday. Despite the outrageous wind, last weekend’s Rock the Dock concert in Check-In Bay drew lots of spectators who were as anxious to get on the water as they were to hear great music – and they did both! This weekend is no different. The much anticipated Grand Jam in Duck Creek (in front of Harbors View Marina) is Saturday from noon ‘til 6:00. Let’s hope for a little less water and a little less breeze! ***** Grand Jam isn’t the only event signaling a really busy week on the waters of Grand Lake, though. The High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament has the lake covered with high school fishing competitors this week. The tournament runs through Saturday, which is the final day. Also on Saturday, amidst the hundreds of boats full of high-schoolers, the Grand Lake Sailing Club hosts a Peanut Regatta with a bunch of sailboats. What could possibly go wrong? ***** Some people are just a lot quicker and better than others with responses to others who complain about things without thinking them through. Since its inception in 2017, Camp Bandage has taken place at the scenic Grand Lake RV Resort on the beautiful Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees. This free outdoor event is designed to provide essential safety, health, and first aid training for children of all ages, fostering a sense of awareness and responsibility among young participants. A Community Effort Each year, Camp Bandage brings together several groups and organizations from the Grand Lake community, all committed to educating children in a fun and diverse environment. Families can look forward to a day filled with interactive learning experiences and demonstrations on a wide range of safety topics, including: Safe Outdoor Recreation Water Safety Health and First Aid Weather Awareness Fire Safety Injury Prevention Substance Abuse Prevention Meet Your Heroes One of the event’s highlights is the opportunity for children to meet and interact with local first responders, including fire, police, and EMTs. Young attendees can explore a variety of emergency vehicles firsthand, including helicopters, fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, patrol boats, cranes, and a fire boat. This interactive experience helps children understand the vital role these professionals play in keeping the community safe. Mock Car Crash Demonstration The grand finale of Camp Bandage is an impactful mock car crash demonstration presented by Grand Lake area law enforcement and first responders. This demonstration allows participants to witness, in real-time, how emergency responders conduct rescue efforts. It offers an invaluable opportunity to learn about the procedures and challenges faced by these brave individuals in emergency situations. Fun and Games In addition to numerous safety classes and hands-on demonstrations, Camp Bandage promises a fun-filled atmosphere with activities like karaoke, dancing, and games to keep children entertained throughout the day. Free for All Thanks to the generous support of local sponsors, everything at Camp Bandage is provided free of charge. This includes admission, prizes, hot dogs, and drinks, making it accessible to everyone in the community.
