Nestled along the scenic shores of Grand Lake—just an angler's cast away from the historic Pensacola Dam—the Grand River Dam Authority’s (GRDA) Ecosystems and Education Center stands as a testament to the authority's commitment to environmental stewardship and education. This state-of-the-art facility plays a crucial role in GRDA’s ongoing efforts to manage and protect the natural resources under its care. Extensive Natural Resources The GRDA oversees nearly 70,000 acres of lake water surface in Oklahoma, encompassing the vast expanses of Grand Lake, Lake Hudson, and the W.R. Holway Reservoir. Since 2016, its stewardship has also extended to the picturesque waters of the Illinois River. This extensive area is not only vital for recreational activities but also serves as an important habitat for various wildlife species. Advanced Water Quality Laboratory At the heart of the Ecosystems and Education Center is a state-of-the-art water quality laboratory. Here, GRDA's dedicated team members engage in ongoing water quality monitoring, ensuring the health and sustainability of the water resources. Regular testing and analysis enable the GRDA to maintain high standards of water quality, safeguarding both recreational users and the ecosystem. A One-Stop Resource for Lake Area Needs Beyond the laboratory, the Ecosystems and Education Center serves as a “one-stop permit shopping” location for lake area residents and visitors. Whether you are preparing to build a dock, an angler looking to schedule a tournament, or someone seeking lake-related permits for Grand Lake or Lake Hudson, the center offers the resources and assistance you need to navigate the permitting process smoothly. Community Engagement and Education One of the most significant features of the Ecosystems and Education Center is the Grand Hall, a spacious auditorium and community meeting area available for rental. This versatile space offers stunning views of Grand Lake and Pensacola Dam, making it an ideal venue for events and gatherings. Throughout much of the year, the Grand Hall also functions as a classroom for student groups. Here, learners engage in educational programs focused on various topics, including: Ecosystem Management: Understanding the delicate balance of local ecosystems. Hydroelectric Power: Exploring how the GRDA harnesses water power to generate electricity. Water and Electric Safety: Learning essential safety practices for interacting with water and electrical systems. History of the Grand River Region: Delving into the rich history and cultural significance of the area. Miami Animal Alliance

We are a dedicated group of citizens from Miami and surrounding areas who have come together to establish a new shelter for animals in need. Our mission is to provide care, support, and a second chance for pets who find themselves without a home. Through the Miami Animal Alliance, we are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of these animals. Donate to Make a Difference Every contribution counts! We have set up a PayPal account on our website to facilitate donations. 100% of all donations received go directly to the animals at our rescue, ensuring that every dollar helps improve their quality of life. Your generosity will provide food, medical care, and shelter for our furry friends. Our Services The Miami Animal Alliance offers a variety of services designed to benefit animals and the community, including: Foster Care: We provide a nurturing environment for animals in need through our foster care program. Adoption Services: We help connect loving families with pets looking for forever homes. Volunteering Opportunities: We welcome individuals who want to volunteer their time and skills to help animals in our care. No-Kill Rescue: As a no-kill shelter, we are dedicated to saving as many lives as possible. Foster Program: Our foster program allows us to place animals in temporary homes until they are ready for adoption. Transport Services: We assist in transporting animals to their new homes or veterinary appointments. Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Services: To combat pet overpopulation, we offer low-cost spay and neuter services in our area. Foster Homes Needed Interested in Fostering? We are always in need of compassionate foster homes. If you have space in your home and love in your heart for animals, please reach out to us. We provide support with food whenever possible, and we cover any necessary medical expenses for the pets in your care. Why Foster a Dog? Fostering an animal can be one of the most rewarding experiences. By opening your home to a dog in need, you are not only helping the animal but also making a significant impact on the shelter's ability to take in more pets. Here’s how fostering benefits everyone involved: You free up space in the shelter for another animal in need. You provide the foster dog with time to prepare for adoption. You help the shelter gain valuable insights about the dog, ensuring they find the best home possible. You socialize the dog, helping them adjust to a home environment and interact with different people and pets. Become a Member of MAA Show your support by becoming a member of the Miami Animal Alliance! 100% of your annual membership fee will directly benefit the welfare of our sheltered animals. We strive to create an organization that you can take pride in being a part of. If, at any point, we do not meet your expectations, your prorated membership fee will be refunded. As a member, you will be invited to all meetings and have the opportunity to vote on significant decisions regarding the organization. You can also run for Board offices and join committees. Our Mission Statement The Miami Animal Alliance, Inc. is a dedicated group of professionals committed to serving as a first line of defense for the urgent needs of distressed animals. Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo

Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo in Vinita, OK, is the premier rodeo event held in the Southwest! This is a four-day event that is kicked off by the Annual Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo Parade on RT 66 in downtown Vinita. Every night of the rodeo is filled with action packed events from Girl's Barrel Racing, Bare Back Bronc Riding, Steer Roping, Bull Riding & Team Roping, and much much more!! Bring the family and enjoy an amazing night at the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo in Vinita, OK. Our History Will Rogers was born in 1879, at a ranch house on the Verdigris River. The only towns that existed nearby were Vinita, Indian Territory (which later became Oklahoma), and Coffeyville, Kansas. After his mother died in 1890, Will was sent to several schools away from the ranch, but the one he grew to like the most was Willie Halsell College located in Vinita. He attended three terms from 1892, until 1895, and he never forgot the happy days he spent there or the friends he made. Years later, while attending a school reunion in 1934, Will Rogers told the Vinita folks, "Have a rodeo here next year and I'll come back." He returned that fall for the old-timer's parade, but on August 15, 1935, just days before the rodeo, Will Rogers and famed pilot Wiley Post were both tragically killed in a plane crash. It was decided that the Vinita rodeo would be held as a memorial to Vinita's cherished "son" Will Rogers, and it has been every year since. The Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo has become one of the most outstanding rodeos in the entire southwest. [read more]

Welcome Back Weekend

The official and annual reopening of Grand Lake, dubbed Welcome Back Weekend for over twenty years, The traditional Poker Run, an event that attracts nearly 400 participants in the event’s inaugural year, remains the backbone of one of the most popular off-season weekends ever unveiled on Oklahoma’s premier lake. What is Welcome Back Weekend? Welcome Back Weekend is an annual event celebrated at Grand Lake, OK. This event was started in March of 1992 by Terry Frost, the previous owner of the Cherokee Yacht Club. The weekend began with a poker run on Saturday and a showing of the hands-on Sunday. Grand Laker Terry Frost and the late Barbara Connor proposed incorporating a Chamber-sponsored “Casino Night,” which became an instant success. Welcome Back Weekend is to get you back on the lake so you can enjoy Grand Lake more of the year. The event is not just a party anymore; it has come to signify the beginning of the boating season on Grand Lake. Although Grand Lake is always open to the public... Welcome Back Weekend is the official Celebration of the coming season! [read more]

Grand Lake Bum

June 23 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum Summer is here – officially! According to the calendar, it arrived with high temperatures beginning with a “9” last Friday on what is typically referred to as “the longest day of the year.” That’s not true, by the way. I stayed up all day and all night just to make certain. Sure enough, it was the same length as all the other days – 24 hours. FYI. ***** For the second consecutive weekend, there is a concert on the water Saturday. Despite the outrageous wind, last weekend’s Rock the Dock concert in Check-In Bay drew lots of spectators who were as anxious to get on the water as they were to hear great music – and they did both! This weekend is no different. The much anticipated Grand Jam in Duck Creek (in front of Harbors View Marina) is Saturday from noon ‘til 6:00. Let’s hope for a little less water and a little less breeze! ***** Grand Jam isn’t the only event signaling a really busy week on the waters of Grand Lake, though. The High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament has the lake covered with high school fishing competitors this week. The tournament runs through Saturday, which is the final day. Also on Saturday, amidst the hundreds of boats full of high-schoolers, the Grand Lake Sailing Club hosts a Peanut Regatta with a bunch of sailboats. What could possibly go wrong? ***** Some people are just a lot quicker and better than others with responses to others who complain about things without thinking them through. One of my favorites is a flight attendant for British Airways who received a complaint from a woman who said she was not comfortable with the lack of blinds in a Boeing 747 first class restroom that had a window. “Madam,” said the flight attendant, “If someone is clinging to the side of this aircraft at 35,000 feet, they’ve earned the view.” ***** How did that old Beach Boys song go? “Bomb, bomb, bomb…bomb, bomb Iran.” Was that it? ***** GRAND LAKE BUM SHOUT-OUTS: Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Grand Lakers Jason Benson, Rob Stallings, Angella Johnson, Joe Zaloudek, Terri Fowler, Vic Bird, Dallas Sorrels, Bobbie Owens, Larry Sanders, Tonya Moorhead, John Jameson, and Dandy Risman. ***** BEST GRAND LAKE EVENTS THIS WEEK: Monday-Wednesday is “Kids’ Camp” at The Anchor at Shangri-La (8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.). Tuesday is the kick-off of the five-day High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament on Grand Lake. Thursday is Trivia Night” at BOOM at The Regatta. Friday & Saturday, there is “Lawn-a-Thon” inflatable fun for the kids on The Anchor Lawn at Shangri-La (11:00-5:00). Saturday is another Peanut Regatta from Grand Lake Sailing Club and the big Grand Jam on-the-water concert at Safe Harbor Harbors View Marina in Duck Creek (12:00-6:00 p.m.). Saturday night is Country Music Night at Big Shots (9:00 p.m.). Next Wednesday, the holiday fun begins with Vinita Fireworks at Craig County Fairgrounds. ***** RANDY KREHBIEL’S FACTOID OF THE WEEK: Although best remembered as a silversmith (and his midnight ride), Paul Revere also practiced dentistry and fashioned false teeth from various materials. ***** FUN FACT OF THE WEEK: The King Ranch in Texas covers 825,000 acres. It is larger than Rhode Island. ***** ODD FACT OF THE WEEK: William Wrigley, Jr. sold soaps in 1891, offering buyers baking powder as an incentive. The baking powder became more popular, so he started selling it, offering gum as an incentive. But the gum was even more popular, so he started selling that. In 1893, he launched Juicy Fruit Gum. ***** BEST FACEBOOK POST OF THE WEEK: Some people drink deeply from the well of knowledge. Others just rinse and spit. ***** WORD FUN OF THE WEEK: “Sugar” is the only word in the English language where “su-“ makes a “sh” sound. At least, I’m pretty sure that’s right. ***** BEST SIGN SEEN THIS WEEK (seen on the door of a family-owned diner): Sorry, CLOSED. Jack punched Alex because he found out Alex was messing around with Janice, even though Jack and Janice are broke up. Anyway, Alex’ tooth went into the chili, so we can’t open till we find it, ‘cause we can’t throw away all that chili. Sorry, again. ***** BEST BLUESKY POST OF THE WEEK: Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. Philosophy is wondering if that means ketchup is a smoothie. ***** PUN OF THE WEEK: What happens when a microscope crashes into a telescope? They kaleidoscope! ***** UNANSWERED QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Why has someone from Earth won all 71 “Miss Universe” titles? No one from anywhere else in the universe has ever won. ***** OBSERVATION OF THE WEEK: If you can’t think of a word, just say, “I forgot the English word for it.” That way, people will think you’re bilingual instead of an idiot. ***** QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you never know if they’re genuine.” – Abraham Lincoln ***** FEEL-OLD MOMENTS OF THE WEEK: Superstar actress Meryl Streep turned 76 years old Sunday; and the music legend, Sir Paul McCartney, has turned 83. How ‘bout THIS for feeling old? The terrifying movie “Jaws” was released 50 years ago this week! ***** BEST WEEKEND LIVE ENTERTAINMENT: On Monkey Island, Sundown Entertainment hosts Thursday night karaoke at Doc’s Bar & Grill at Shangri-La (6:00-9:00 p.m.) and Scott Musick performs live Friday night at Doc’s Bar & Grill at Shangri-La. Downbeat will provide the music Saturday night at Eddy’s Lakeside Bar. There’s musical Bingo fun with Sundown Entertainment Wednesday night at The Monkey Bar, and DJ Kennedy with Rockstar Entertainment leads the singing Friday night followed by live music from Robbi Bell Saturday night. Saturday night is “Country Night” at Big Shots on Monkey Island with live music by The Southern Accents Band. In Grove, The Blue Underground will provide the music Friday night at Grand Lake Casino’s Venue 655 followed by Blues Doctors Saturday night. Carl Acuff, Jr. will be on stage Friday night at Cherokee Casino Grove’s 1897 Bar followed by Runnin’ on Empty Saturday night. There’s musical Bingo every Wednesday night and DJ Laidback Larry will provide the musical entertainment Saturday night at R-Bar Dance Hall & Saloon. On South Grand Lake, The Paul Roper Band will kick off the weekend Friday night at Sharky’s at Hammerhead Marina followed by The Steel Roses Band with Travis Bond Saturday night and Brent Giddens Sunday afternoon. Robbie Bell starts the weekend music Wednesday night at Mooney’s Sunset Bar & Grill in Disney followed by B and Ava Thursday night, Hi Fidelics Friday night, The Faulconers Saturday night and The Smith Brothers Band Sunday afternoon (4:00). The Jesse Joice Trio will entertain at Blind Swine Duck Creek Friday night – and Saturday is a really big line-up at the Grand Jam on-the-water concert at Blind Swine Duck Creek/Harbors View Marina (noon-6:00) including Lickitty Split, Randall George & Friends, and Damsel. Mixtape 918 will provide the musical entertainment Saturday night at The Drunken Rooster in Cleora; and The Hype will perform at Hookers at Cherokee Yacht Club Saturday. There are three nights and one afternoon of music this week at Indigo Sky Casino. TJ Scarlett starts the music Thursday night followed The New Waves Friday, and Paralandra Saturday. Michelle Warren will entertain at Indigo Sunday from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Left of Center entertains Saturday night in Riverbend Casino’s Club 60 West; and there are three nights of live entertainment at Downstream Casino’s Legends Sports Bar – The Brothers Moore Thursday night, Bobby DeGonia Friday night, and Coyote Claw Saturday. Cole Swindell will also be in concert Friday night at Downstream’s Pavilion with opening act Easton Corbin. Saturday night is XFN Xtreme Fight Night #402 at Buffalo Run Casino’s Peoria Showplace; and Mark Aldred will entertain at Buffalo Run’s Backwoods Bar Saturday night. ***** DINING & DRINKING UPDATE: Friday night is the 1st Anniversary party at The Monkey Bar on Monkey Island with food by Cristobal’s Tamales.
