History of the Grand Lake Pelican Festival:
Since its inception in 1983, the Pelican Festival has become a cherished tradition in the Grand Lake community. The event celebrates the fall migration of the majestic American White Pelicans as they return to the stunning waters of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees. These once-scarce birds now flock to the area in significant numbers, arriving from early February through May and September through November.
Visitors to the festival can marvel at the sight of these incredible birds gliding overhead, as boats gently cruise the shimmering waters below. The Pelican Festival is a unique opportunity to witness nature’s beauty and celebrate the arrival of the pelicans as they make their annual stop in northeast Oklahoma.

The GRDA Police Department is dedicated to protecting and serving the community through a variety of responsibilities, including:
Safety Enforcement: The GRDA police ensure the safety of all visitors engaging in recreational activities on the lakes and waterways managed by the authority. This includes monitoring watercraft, swimming areas, and other facilities to maintain a safe environment for all users.
Regulation Enforcement: The department is responsible for enforcing GRDA lake regulations, which are established to preserve the natural resources and ensure the responsible use of the lakes. This includes overseeing compliance with boating laws, fishing regulations, and other local ordinances.
Asset Protection: The GRDA police patrol and protect all assets owned by the Grand River Dam Authority, ensuring that facilities, equipment, and infrastructure are secure and well-maintained.

Welcome Back Weekend
The official and annual reopening of Grand Lake, dubbed Welcome Back Weekend for over twenty years, The traditional Poker Run, an event that attracts nearly 400 participants in the event’s inaugural year, remains the backbone of one of the most popular off-season weekends ever unveiled on Oklahoma’s premier lake.
What is Welcome Back Weekend?
Welcome Back Weekend is an annual event celebrated at Grand Lake, OK. This event was started in March of 1992 by Terry Frost, the previous owner of the Cherokee Yacht Club. The weekend began with a poker run on Saturday and a showing of the hands-on Sunday. Grand Laker Terry Frost and the late Barbara Connor proposed incorporating a Chamber-sponsored “Casino Night,” which became an instant success. Welcome Back Weekend is to get you back on the lake so you can enjoy Grand Lake more of the year. The event is not just a party anymore; it has come to signify the beginning of the boating season on Grand Lake.

Bethesda Free Clinic
Opened: June 23, 2012
Since its inception on June 23, 2012, Bethesda Free Clinic has been a beacon of hope and support for the community. Sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Langley and supported by the Craig-Mayes Baptist Association, our mission is to share and demonstrate the message of Christ by uniting volunteers to help meet the spiritual, emotional, and healthcare needs of individuals at no cost to the patient.
A Vision Realized
The concept of Bethesda Free Clinic was envisioned over two years before opening by Dr. Pat Belford, a devoted member of the church. This initiative aligns seamlessly with the church’s vision of being a "Life Development Church," committed to enhancing the lives of those in the Langley community. Originally, the plan was to operate at least one Saturday a month, but through God's blessings and the generosity of medical personnel and volunteers, the clinic is proud to be open every Saturday, providing vital services to those in need.

At Bethesda Free Clinic, we focus on providing quality care for acute illnesses, including:

All services are provided completely free of charge, ensuring that everyone has access to the healthcare they need without the burden of financial stress.

Childcare: Please note that the clinic does not provide childcare services.
Medications: The clinic does not maintain any medications, including narcotics. Consequently, we do not write prescriptions for controlled substances, narcotics, or pain medications. For your convenience, a list of drugs for which prescriptions will not be written is available at the clinic.
Resource Assistance: A Resource Director is available during clinic hours to assist clients in identifying additional services and resources that the clinic may not be able to provide. This includes helping individuals find the necessary support within the community for their specific needs.

Event Details
Held on a delightful Wednesday evening in early March, the Chocolate Affair is hosted by Home of Hope, Vinita’s sweetest event that brings together the community for a night of gastronomic pleasure. Attendees can look forward to a sumptuous selection of chocolate desserts and sweet treats prepared by the finest restaurants, caterers, specialty shops, and wineries from Vinita and the surrounding Grand Lake area.
A Sweet Tradition
For many years, the Chocolate Affair took place at the Craig County Community Center. However, in 2021, the challenges posed by the pandemic necessitated a change in format. Embracing the spirit of adaptability, the Home of Hope transformed the event into a drive-through experience. This innovative approach not only ensured safety through social distancing but also garnered popularity among attendees.
In past years, vendors delighted guests with delicious chocolate samples and an assortment of other tasty treats. For the drive-through event, all delectable sweets and chocolate delights were conveniently assembled into pre-packaged treat bags, allowing ticket holders to savor the experience from the comfort of their own homes.
Highlights of the Evening
The Chocolate Affair features a plethora of engaging activities beyond the tantalizing chocolate treats. Guests can participate in a silent auction, which has transitioned online since the event became a drive-through format. The event is known for its fun and creative themes, ranging from a whimsical safari to the enchanting world of Willy Wonka. Attendees have enjoyed special surprises over the years, including visits from Willy Wonka himself and even a free double-feature movie screening on one memorable occasion.
Supporting a Worthy Cause
The Chocolate Affair serves as a vital fundraiser for Home of Hope, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing residential, vocational, and quality-of-life programs for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities across northeast Oklahoma. The event was launched in 2008 to bolster Home of Hope's programs and operations.
Dr. Ralph Richardson, CEO of Home of Hope, emphasizes the significance of contributions to the event: “The support from the Chocolate Affair helps us achieve our mission of promoting choices, independence, and a meaningful life for the individuals we serve. As state and federal funding sources continue to dwindle, events like this are crucial for sustaining our services.
