June 23 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum Summer is here – officially! According to the calendar, it arrived with high temperatures beginning with a “9” last Friday on what is typically referred to as “the longest day of the year.” That’s not true, by the way. I stayed up all day and all night just to make certain. Sure enough, it was the same length as all the other days – 24 hours. FYI. ***** For the second consecutive weekend, there is a concert on the water Saturday. Despite the outrageous wind, last weekend’s Rock the Dock concert in Check-In Bay drew lots of spectators who were as anxious to get on the water as they were to hear great music – and they did both! This weekend is no different. The much anticipated Grand Jam in Duck Creek (in front of Harbors View Marina) is Saturday from noon ‘til 6:00. Let’s hope for a little less water and a little less breeze! ***** Grand Jam isn’t the only event signaling a really busy week on the waters of Grand Lake, though. The High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament has the lake covered with high school fishing competitors this week. The tournament runs through Saturday, which is the final day. Also on Saturday, amidst the hundreds of boats full of high-schoolers, the Grand Lake Sailing Club hosts a Peanut Regatta with a bunch of sailboats. What could possibly go wrong? ***** Some people are just a lot quicker and better than others with responses to others who complain about things without thinking them through. One of my favorites is a flight attendant for British Airways who received a complaint from a woman who said she was not comfortable with the lack of blinds in a Boeing 747 first class restroom that had a window. “Madam,” said the flight attendant, “If someone is clinging to the side of this aircraft at 35,000 feet, they’ve earned the view.” ***** How did that old Beach Boys song go? “Bomb, bomb, bomb…bomb, bomb Iran.” Was that it? ***** GRAND LAKE BUM SHOUT-OUTS: Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Grand Lakers Jason Benson, Rob Stallings, Angella Johnson, Joe Zaloudek, Terri Fowler, Vic Bird, Dallas Sorrels, Bobbie Owens, Larry Sanders, Tonya Moorhead, John Jameson, and Dandy Risman. ***** BEST GRAND LAKE EVENTS THIS WEEK: Monday-Wednesday is “Kids’ Camp” at The Anchor at Shangri-La (8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.). Tuesday is the kick-off of the five-day High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament on Grand Lake. Thursday is Trivia Night” at BOOM at The Regatta. Friday & Saturday, there is “Lawn-a-Thon” inflatable fun for the kids on The Anchor Lawn at Shangri-La (11:00-5:00). Saturday is another Peanut Regatta from Grand Lake Sailing Club and the big Grand Jam on-the-water concert at Safe Harbor Harbors View Marina in Duck Creek (12:00-6:00 p.m.). Saturday night is Country Music Night at Big Shots (9:00 p.m.). Next Wednesday, the holiday fun begins with Vinita Fireworks at Craig County Fairgrounds. ***** RANDY KREHBIEL’S FACTOID OF THE WEEK: Although best remembered as a silversmith (and his midnight ride), Paul Revere also practiced dentistry and fashioned false teeth from various materials. ***** FUN FACT OF THE WEEK: The King Ranch in Texas covers 825,000 acres. It is larger than Rhode Island. ***** ODD FACT OF THE WEEK: William Wrigley, Jr. sold soaps in 1891, offering buyers baking powder as an incentive. The baking powder became more popular, so he started selling it, offering gum as an incentive. But the gum was even more popular, so he started selling that. In 1893, he launched Juicy Fruit Gum. ***** BEST FACEBOOK POST OF THE WEEK: Some people drink deeply from the well of knowledge. Others just rinse and spit. ***** WORD FUN OF THE WEEK: “Sugar” is the only word in the English language where “su-“ makes a “sh” sound. At least, I’m pretty sure that’s right. ***** BEST SIGN SEEN THIS WEEK (seen on the door of a family-owned diner): Sorry, CLOSED. Jack punched Alex because he found out Alex was messing around with Janice, even though Jack and Janice are broke up. Anyway, Alex’ tooth went into the chili, so we can’t open till we find it, ‘cause we can’t throw away all that chili. Sorry, again. ***** BEST BLUESKY POST OF THE WEEK: Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. Philosophy is wondering if that means ketchup is a smoothie. ***** PUN OF THE WEEK: What happens when a microscope crashes into a telescope? They kaleidoscope! ***** UNANSWERED QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Why has someone from Earth won all 71 “Miss Universe” titles? No one from anywhere else in the universe has ever won. ***** OBSERVATION OF THE WEEK: If you can’t think of a word, just say, “I forgot the English word for it.” That way, people will think you’re bilingual instead of an idiot. ***** QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you never know if they’re genuine.” – Abraham Lincoln ***** FEEL-OLD MOMENTS OF THE WEEK: Superstar actress Meryl Streep turned 76 years old Sunday; and the music legend, Sir Paul McCartney, has turned 83. How ‘bout THIS for feeling old? The terrifying movie “Jaws” was released 50 years ago this week! ***** BEST WEEKEND LIVE ENTERTAINMENT: On Monkey Island, Sundown Entertainment hosts Thursday night karaoke at Doc’s Bar & Grill at Shangri-La (6:00-9:00 p.m.) and Scott Musick performs live Friday night at Doc’s Bar & Grill at Shangri-La. There’s musical Bingo fun with Sundown Entertainment Wednesday night at The Monkey Bar, and DJ Kennedy with Rockstar Entertainment leads the singing Friday night followed by live music from Robbi Bell Saturday night. Carl Acuff, Jr. will be on stage Friday night at Cherokee Casino Grove’s 1897 Bar followed by Runnin’ on Empty Saturday night. Robbie Bell starts the weekend music Wednesday night at Mooney’s Sunset Bar & Grill in Disney followed by B and Ava Thursday night, Hi Fidelics Friday night, The Faulconers Saturday night and The Smith Brothers Band Sunday afternoon (4:00). There are three nights and one afternoon of music this week at Indigo Sky Casino. TJ Scarlett starts the music Thursday night followed The New Waves Friday, and Paralandra Saturday. Opened: June 23, 2012 Since its inception on June 23, 2012, Bethesda Free Clinic has been a beacon of hope and support for the community. Sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Langley and supported by the Craig-Mayes Baptist Association, our mission is to share and demonstrate the message of Christ by uniting volunteers to help meet the spiritual, emotional, and healthcare needs of individuals at no cost to the patient. A Vision Realized The concept of Bethesda Free Clinic was envisioned over two years before opening by Dr. Pat Belford, a devoted member of the church. This initiative aligns seamlessly with the church’s vision of being a "Life Development Church," committed to enhancing the lives of those in the Langley community. Originally, the plan was to operate at least one Saturday a month, but through God's blessings and the generosity of medical personnel and volunteers, the clinic is proud to be open every Saturday, providing vital services to those in need. Services Provided At Bethesda Free Clinic, we focus on providing quality care for acute illnesses, including: Infections Colds Flu All services are provided completely free of charge, ensuring that everyone has access to the healthcare they need without the burden of financial stress. Important Information Childcare: Please note that the clinic does not provide childcare services. Medications: The clinic does not maintain any medications, including narcotics. Consequently, we do not write prescriptions for controlled substances, narcotics, or pain medications. For your convenience, a list of drugs for which prescriptions will not be written is available at the clinic. Resource Assistance: A Resource Director is available during clinic hours to assist clients in identifying additional services and resources that the clinic may not be able to provide. This includes helping individuals find the necessary support within the community for their specific needs. Our Commitment At Bethesda Free Clinic, we are dedicated to serving our community with compassion and care. We believe that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, and we strive to make a positive impact in the lives of those we serve. Whether you're facing a minor illness or seeking resources for further support, we are here to help you on your journey toward better health. Join us at Bethesda Free Clinic every Saturday, and experience the difference that faith-driven service can make in your life. We look forward to serving you and your family! [read more]

The official and annual reopening of Grand Lake, dubbed Welcome Back Weekend for over twenty years, The traditional Poker Run, an event that attracts nearly 400 participants in the event’s inaugural year, remains the backbone of one of the most popular off-season weekends ever unveiled on Oklahoma’s premier lake. What is Welcome Back Weekend? Welcome Back Weekend is an annual event celebrated at Grand Lake, OK. This event was started in March of 1992 by Terry Frost, the previous owner of the Cherokee Yacht Club. The weekend began with a poker run on Saturday and a showing of the hands-on Sunday. Grand Laker Terry Frost and the late Barbara Connor proposed incorporating a Chamber-sponsored “Casino Night,” which became an instant success. Welcome Back Weekend is to get you back on the lake so you can enjoy Grand Lake more of the year. The event is not just a party anymore; it has come to signify the beginning of the boating season on Grand Lake. Although Grand Lake is always open to the public... Welcome Back Weekend is the official Celebration of the coming season! [read more]

Owner: Tammie Pennel Established: 2021 In 2021, Tammie Pennel turned a long-held vision into reality by founding 4 State Searchlight Rentals. After spending 15 years contemplating the purchase of a searchlight for her own business, Tammie recognized the promotional hurdles that many businesses face due to the high costs associated with searchlight advertising. From her previous experiences, Tammie understood the immense advertising potential that a searchlight can offer. The moment she installed a searchlight at her business, the excitement was palpable. Within days, the buzz generated by the dazzling light drew attention, and requests to rent it started pouring in. This immediate response revealed a surprising demand for searchlights in the four-state area, one that far exceeded her initial expectations. What could be sweeter than spending an evening savoring decadent chocolate desserts while supporting a noble cause? The annual Chocolate Affair offers the perfect opportunity for chocoholics and dessert enthusiasts to indulge in an irresistible array of chocolate delights—all while raising funds for a worthwhile organization. Event Details Held on a delightful Wednesday evening in early March, the Chocolate Affair is hosted by Home of Hope, Vinita’s sweetest event that brings together the community for a night of gastronomic pleasure. Attendees can look forward to a sumptuous selection of chocolate desserts and sweet treats prepared by the finest restaurants, caterers, specialty shops, and wineries from Vinita and the surrounding Grand Lake area. A Sweet Tradition For many years, the Chocolate Affair took place at the Craig County Community Center. However, in 2021, the challenges posed by the pandemic necessitated a change in format. Embracing the spirit of adaptability, the Home of Hope transformed the event into a drive-through experience. This innovative approach not only ensured safety through social distancing but also garnered popularity among attendees. In past years, vendors delighted guests with delicious chocolate samples and an assortment of other tasty treats. For the drive-through event, all delectable sweets and chocolate delights were conveniently assembled into pre-packaged treat bags, allowing ticket holders to savor the experience from the comfort of their own homes. Highlights of the Evening The Chocolate Affair features a plethora of engaging activities beyond the tantalizing chocolate treats. Guests can participate in a silent auction, which has transitioned online since the event became a drive-through format. The event is known for its fun and creative themes, ranging from a whimsical safari to the enchanting world of Willy Wonka. Attendees have enjoyed special surprises over the years, including visits from Willy Wonka himself and even a free double-feature movie screening on one memorable occasion. Supporting a Worthy Cause The Chocolate Affair serves as a vital fundraiser for Home of Hope, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing residential, vocational, and quality-of-life programs for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities across northeast Oklahoma. The event was launched in 2008 to bolster Home of Hope's programs and operations. Dr. Ralph Richardson, CEO of Home of Hope, emphasizes the significance of contributions to the event: “The support from the Chocolate Affair helps us achieve our mission of promoting choices, independence, and a meaningful life for the individuals we serve. As state and federal funding sources continue to dwindle, events like this are crucial for sustaining our services. We are incredibly grateful to the vendors and guests who make this event a success.” About Home of Hope Established in 1968, Home of Hope, Inc. operates in Vinita, Jay, Miami, Claremore, Grove, and Pryor. The organization serves over 270 individuals with developmental and other disabilities, employing more than 600 staff members to provide high-quality care and support. Event Location and Ticket Information The drive-through Chocolate Affair will be held at the Home of Hope Administrative Building, located at 226 W. Dwain Willis Ave. Tickets for this delectable event can be purchased online or at several locations in Vinita, including: Clanton’s Cafe Lucille’s Flowers & Gifts Vinita Daily Journal Centsible Spending Home of Hope Administrative Building For more information on the event, ticket purchases, and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Shelby Stewart, Marketing and Development Coordinator, at (918) 256-7825 ext. 168 or via email at shelby.stewart@homeofhope.com. What was once a humble hayfield with only a few run-down hangars has transformed into South Grand Lake's vital transportation and economic hub. Today, the South Grand Lake Regional Airport stands as a testament to the hard work, determination, and community support that has turned a simple grass strip into a fully operational, state-of-the-art airport serving both personal and business aviation. Thanks to the contributions of local lake organizations, the town of Ketchum, and the airport's dedicated volunteers, including the Girlfriends of the Airport, the airport has undergone significant upgrades. With the addition of an asphalt runway, the airport now offers full-service facilities for both prop and jet aircraft, meeting the needs of aviators and visitors alike. The airport is a key gateway for travelers looking to visit the Grand Lake area, extending the region’s reach beyond the typical driving radius. By attracting visitors who would otherwise not have considered traveling to the area, the airport is helping to drive economic growth and tourism, with an estimated annual economic impact of $2.5 million. Future plans for the airport are even more exciting, with the development of new features that will make it an even more significant asset for the region. Coming soon are several major improvements, including the installation of an AWOS III (Automated Weather Observation System), aviation light industrial development, a new terminal building, expanded parking apron, and a parallel taxiway. The community's ongoing support is crucial to the success of the airport. If you're interested in contributing or have any questions or suggestions, please reach out to Brent Howard at 918-693-1855. South Grand Lake Regional Airport continues to grow, and its role in connecting the Grand Lake area to the broader world has never been more vital. Stay tuned for more developments as this essential community asset continues to soar. [read more]
