June 23 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum Summer is here – officially! According to the calendar, it arrived with high temperatures beginning with a “9” last Friday on what is typically referred to as “the longest day of the year.” That’s not true, by the way. I stayed up all day and all night just to make certain. Sure enough, it was the same length as all the other days – 24 hours. FYI. ***** For the second consecutive weekend, there is a concert on the water Saturday. Despite the outrageous wind, last weekend’s Rock the Dock concert in Check-In Bay drew lots of spectators who were as anxious to get on the water as they were to hear great music – and they did both! This weekend is no different. The much anticipated Grand Jam in Duck Creek (in front of Harbors View Marina) is Saturday from noon ‘til 6:00. Let’s hope for a little less water and a little less breeze! ***** Grand Jam isn’t the only event signaling a really busy week on the waters of Grand Lake, though. The High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament has the lake covered with high school fishing competitors this week. The tournament runs through Saturday, which is the final day. Also on Saturday, amidst the hundreds of boats full of high-schoolers, the Grand Lake Sailing Club hosts a Peanut Regatta with a bunch of sailboats. What could possibly go wrong? ***** Some people are just a lot quicker and better than others with responses to others who complain about things without thinking them through. One of my favorites is a flight attendant for British Airways who received a complaint from a woman who said she was not comfortable with the lack of blinds in a Boeing 747 first class restroom that had a window. “Madam,” said the flight attendant, “If someone is clinging to the side of this aircraft at 35,000 feet, they’ve earned the view.” ***** How did that old Beach Boys song go? “Bomb, bomb, bomb…bomb, bomb Iran.” Was that it? ***** GRAND LAKE BUM SHOUT-OUTS: Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Grand Lakers Jason Benson, Rob Stallings, Angella Johnson, Joe Zaloudek, Terri Fowler, Vic Bird, Dallas Sorrels, Bobbie Owens, Larry Sanders, Tonya Moorhead, John Jameson, and Dandy Risman. ***** BEST GRAND LAKE EVENTS THIS WEEK: Monday-Wednesday is “Kids’ Camp” at The Anchor at Shangri-La (8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.). Established in 1985 by Bill and Linda Goldner, the amphitheater has become a beloved destination for visitors from across the nation and the world. The amphitheater’s mission is clear: to tell "His story" — the story of the Bible, its characters, and the transformative power of faith. A Rich History of Powerful Productions Since its opening, Picture in Scripture has captivated over 225,000 visitors from all 50 states and 119 countries. The amphitheater’s first production, "The Man Who Ran", told the story of Jonah, Jesus, and the great fish. This production ran for 20 years and set the stage for future successes, including "The Elijah Factor", which brought the powerful story of the prophet Elijah to the stage. In 2017, "Damascus Road: Where Saul Becomes Paul, the Greatest Apostle of All Times" debuted, telling the story of Saul’s persecution of the early Church and his conversion on the road to Damascus. This production continues to be a central piece of the amphitheater’s offerings, drawing audiences every summer with its powerful narrative. An Unforgettable Theater Experience Each summer, Picture in Scripture Amphitheater stages an original Biblical production featuring a 60-80 person cast, local actors, exotic live animals, state-of-the-art surround sound, and special effects. The combination of drama, faith, and stunning visuals creates an unforgettable experience. The amphitheater is designed to enhance the spiritual journey of its guests, allowing them to witness Bible stories in a dramatic, immersive setting. A Family-Friendly Atmosphere Picture in Scripture is not just a theater, it is a place for families to gather and make memories. Before the show begins, visitors can enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities such as the petting zoo, where they can interact with Simon the camel, Yancy the yak, and other animals used in the productions. The zoo is open from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on performance nights. Guests can also enjoy a delicious dinner served in the pavilion, with options such as charbroiled hamburgers, grilled chicken, barbecue, and catfish. Meals are served from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and include a drink. The menu offers something for everyone, including a children’s plate with a hamburger, chicken sandwich, or hot dog. Ticket Information and Showtimes Dinner & Show Tickets: Adults: $19.75 for catfish platter, $18.75 for sandwich platter Children's Plate: $6 Show-only Tickets: $14.75 for adults, children 10 and under are free. The showtime begins with a musical pre-show at 8:00 p.m., and the play starts at 8:50 p.m. The show lasts approximately 1 ½ hours. Reservations are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. The official and annual reopening of Grand Lake, dubbed Welcome Back Weekend for over twenty years, The traditional Poker Run, an event that attracts nearly 400 participants in the event’s inaugural year, remains the backbone of one of the most popular off-season weekends ever unveiled on Oklahoma’s premier lake. What is Welcome Back Weekend? Welcome Back Weekend is an annual event celebrated at Grand Lake, OK. This event was started in March of 1992 by Terry Frost, the previous owner of the Cherokee Yacht Club. The weekend began with a poker run on Saturday and a showing of the hands-on Sunday. Grand Laker Terry Frost and the late Barbara Connor proposed incorporating a Chamber-sponsored “Casino Night,” which became an instant success.
