Thanks to the contributions of local lake organizations, the town of Ketchum, and the airport's dedicated volunteers, including the Girlfriends of the Airport, the airport has undergone significant upgrades. With the addition of an asphalt runway, the airport now offers full-service facilities for both prop and jet aircraft, meeting the needs of aviators and visitors alike. The airport is a key gateway for travelers looking to visit the Grand Lake area, extending the region’s reach beyond the typical driving radius. By attracting visitors who would otherwise not have considered traveling to the area, the airport is helping to drive economic growth and tourism, with an estimated annual economic impact of $2.5 million. The official and annual reopening of Grand Lake, dubbed Welcome Back Weekend for over twenty years, The traditional Poker Run, an event that attracts nearly 400 participants in the event’s inaugural year, remains the backbone of one of the most popular off-season weekends ever unveiled on Oklahoma’s premier lake. What is Welcome Back Weekend? Welcome Back Weekend is an annual event celebrated at Grand Lake, OK. This event was started in March of 1992 by Terry Frost, the previous owner of the Cherokee Yacht Club. The weekend began with a poker run on Saturday and a showing of the hands-on Sunday. Grand Laker Terry Frost and the late Barbara Connor proposed incorporating a Chamber-sponsored “Casino Night,” which became an instant success. Event Details Held on a delightful Wednesday evening in early March, the Chocolate Affair is hosted by Home of Hope, Vinita’s sweetest event that brings together the community for a night of gastronomic pleasure. Attendees can look forward to a sumptuous selection of chocolate desserts and sweet treats prepared by the finest restaurants, caterers, specialty shops, and wineries from Vinita and the surrounding Grand Lake area. A Sweet Tradition For many years, the Chocolate Affair took place at the Craig County Community Center. However, in 2021, the challenges posed by the pandemic necessitated a change in format. Embracing the spirit of adaptability, the Home of Hope transformed the event into a drive-through experience. This innovative approach not only ensured safety through social distancing but also garnered popularity among attendees.
