June 23 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum Summer is here – officially! According to the calendar, it arrived with high temperatures beginning with a “9” last Friday on what is typically referred to as “the longest day of the year.” That’s not true, by the way. I stayed up all day and all night just to make certain. Sure enough, it was the same length as all the other days – 24 hours. FYI. ***** For the second consecutive weekend, there is a concert on the water Saturday. Despite the outrageous wind, last weekend’s Rock the Dock concert in Check-In Bay drew lots of spectators who were as anxious to get on the water as they were to hear great music – and they did both! This weekend is no different. The much anticipated Grand Jam in Duck Creek (in front of Harbors View Marina) is Saturday from noon ‘til 6:00. Let’s hope for a little less water and a little less breeze! ***** Grand Jam isn’t the only event signaling a really busy week on the waters of Grand Lake, though. The High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament has the lake covered with high school fishing competitors this week. The tournament runs through Saturday, which is the final day. Also on Saturday, amidst the hundreds of boats full of high-schoolers, the Grand Lake Sailing Club hosts a Peanut Regatta with a bunch of sailboats. What could possibly go wrong? ***** Some people are just a lot quicker and better than others with responses to others who complain about things without thinking them through. One of my favorites is a flight attendant for British Airways who received a complaint from a woman who said she was not comfortable with the lack of blinds in a Boeing 747 first class restroom that had a window. “Madam,” said the flight attendant, “If someone is clinging to the side of this aircraft at 35,000 feet, they’ve earned the view.” ***** How did that old Beach Boys song go? “Bomb, bomb, bomb…bomb, bomb Iran.” Was that it? ***** GRAND LAKE BUM SHOUT-OUTS: Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Grand Lakers Jason Benson, Rob Stallings, Angella Johnson, Joe Zaloudek, Terri Fowler, Vic Bird, Dallas Sorrels, Bobbie Owens, Larry Sanders, Tonya Moorhead, John Jameson, and Dandy Risman. ***** BEST GRAND LAKE EVENTS THIS WEEK: Monday-Wednesday is “Kids’ Camp” at The Anchor at Shangri-La (8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.). Tuesday is the kick-off of the five-day High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament on Grand Lake. Thursday is Trivia Night” at BOOM at The Regatta. Friday & Saturday, there is “Lawn-a-Thon” inflatable fun for the kids on The Anchor Lawn at Shangri-La (11:00-5:00). Saturday is another Peanut Regatta from Grand Lake Sailing Club and the big Grand Jam on-the-water concert at Safe Harbor Harbors View Marina in Duck Creek (12:00-6:00 p.m.). Saturday night is Country Music Night at Big Shots (9:00 p.m.). Next Wednesday, the holiday fun begins with Vinita Fireworks at Craig County Fairgrounds. ***** RANDY KREHBIEL’S FACTOID OF THE WEEK: Although best remembered as a silversmith (and his midnight ride), Paul Revere also practiced dentistry and fashioned false teeth from various materials. ***** FUN FACT OF THE WEEK: The King Ranch in Texas covers 825,000 acres. My Journey: From Adventure to Art Throughout my younger years, I immersed myself in outdoor activities such as off-road motorcycling, hang gliding, and boating on California’s Monterey Bay. However, as I grew older, I started noticing the light, shapes, and patterns that others around me seemed to overlook. This new awareness led me to discover a passion for photography that I never anticipated. When I moved to Oklahoma and settled on the shores of Grand Lake, I gained the perfect environment for my newfound passion. With 60 miles of pristine freshwater at my doorstep, I regularly took my camera outdoors, capturing nature and wildlife in its endless variety. Opened: June 23, 2012 Since its inception on June 23, 2012, Bethesda Free Clinic has been a beacon of hope and support for the community. Sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Langley and supported by the Craig-Mayes Baptist Association, our mission is to share and demonstrate the message of Christ by uniting volunteers to help meet the spiritual, emotional, and healthcare needs of individuals at no cost to the patient. A Vision Realized The concept of Bethesda Free Clinic was envisioned over two years before opening by Dr. Pat Belford, a devoted member of the church. This initiative aligns seamlessly with the church’s vision of being a "Life Development Church," committed to enhancing the lives of those in the Langley community. Originally, the plan was to operate at least one Saturday a month, but through God's blessings and the generosity of medical personnel and volunteers, the clinic is proud to be open every Saturday, providing vital services to those in need. Services Provided At Bethesda Free Clinic, we focus on providing quality care for acute illnesses, including: Infections Colds Flu All services are provided completely free of charge, ensuring that everyone has access to the healthcare they need without the burden of financial stress. Important Information Childcare: Please note that the clinic does not provide childcare services. Medications: The clinic does not maintain any medications, including narcotics. Consequently, we do not write prescriptions for controlled substances, narcotics, or pain medications. For your convenience, a list of drugs for which prescriptions will not be written is available at the clinic. Resource Assistance: A Resource Director is available during clinic hours to assist clients in identifying additional services and resources that the clinic may not be able to provide. This includes helping individuals find the necessary support within the community for their specific needs. Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo
Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo in Vinita, OK, is the premier rodeo event held in the Southwest! This is a four-day event that is kicked off by the Annual Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo Parade on RT 66 in downtown Vinita. Every night of the rodeo is filled with action packed events from Girl's Barrel Racing, Bare Back Bronc Riding, Steer Roping, Bull Riding & Team Roping, and much much more!! Bring the family and enjoy an amazing night at the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo in Vinita, OK. Our History Will Rogers was born in 1879, at a ranch house on the Verdigris River. The only towns that existed nearby were Vinita, Indian Territory (which later became Oklahoma), and Coffeyville, Kansas. After his mother died in 1890, Will was sent to several schools away from the ranch, but the one he grew to like the most was Willie Halsell College located in Vinita. He attended three terms from 1892, until 1895, and he never forgot the happy days he spent there or the friends he made. Years later, while attending a school reunion in 1934, Will Rogers told the Vinita folks, "Have a rodeo here next year and I'll come back." He returned that fall for the old-timer's parade, but on August 15, 1935, just days before the rodeo, Will Rogers and famed pilot Wiley Post were both tragically killed in a plane crash. It was decided that the Vinita rodeo would be held as a memorial to Vinita's cherished "son" Will Rogers, and it has been every year since.
